Aisha Gaddafi’s lawyers have filed a formal petition to the International Criminal Court, seeking an authorized copy of her father’s death certificate. Libya’s new authorities, the National Transitional Council, have not responded to her requests for basic information about the death of Muammar Gaddafi, who was killed together with his son Muatassim during a popular anti-regime uprising in November. In December, Aisha, who is currently in Algeria, requested that the ICC investigate the assassination of her father and brother, but this request also remains unanswered.
Aisha’s lawyers say the new petition to The Hague is in part intended to show that Saif al-Islam, Gaddafi’s other son, will not receive a fair trial in post-war Libya. Saif al-Islam, who briefly commanded the old regime’s troops after Gaddafi’s death, was arrested in the country's remote southern desert in November. In January, the Libyan justice minister declared that Saif al-Islam would be tried in Libya, not in The Hague, though later other ministers said no decision had yet been made.
